Listening Test

The Listening Test uses an intuitive Yes/No/Maybe format to measure students' comprehension of spoken English. This test is most sensitive at beginning through intermediate levels.

Reading Test

The Reading Test uses the Yes/No/Maybe format to measure comprehension of written English. This test is most sensitive at low through high intermediate levels.

Writing Test

The Writing Test is based on the C-Test format, which has been extensively researched as a test of written English proficiency.  It measures a student's mastery of sentence-level vocabulary and grammar. The C-Test is a highly discriminative test that is sensitive at all levels.

GLES recommends using the full battery for placement in a multi-level multi-skill program. Single tests can be used for placement in skill-focused classes.
